I’m a great believer in contributing as much as possible to the community in which you live in whatever way you can. Whenever possible we support local shops and markets rather than the large supermarkets and buy Portuguese made products if available.
One of the most important ways we can contribute is by supporting our local Bombeiros. It’s incredible to believe that only 10% of the fire fighting staff are salaried meaning 90% are volunteers. They rely very heavily on monetary support from the public for new equipment and fire fighting clothing and during the summer with the high risk of forest fires they really appreciate donations of:
- BOTTLES OF WATER (no larger than 500 ml bottles)
- ENERGY BARS
- ENERGY DRINKS
These can be delivered to your local Fire Station. There is also an excellent Facebook group that report on the current fires and co-ordinate the collection and distribution of the resources.
When we lived in Malaysia we supported a local Children’s Home that didn’t receive any Government support. We organised a Charity Ball with dinner, a live band and a charity auction. Incredibly we raised a profit of circa €35,000 which we donated to the Children’s Home! It was very hard work to organise but well worth the effort and great fun….
It’s our intention to organise a Charity Ball for the Bombeiros in Tavira hopefully in September 2017. Please message me if you would like to help raise sponsership etc.
