Our disappointment at losing the property on Armona island was real. That night over dinner back in Olhão we discussed the reality of the situation. We also discussed how much we had liked Tavira.
The next morning with less than 30 hours until we had to be at the airport we drove to Tavira. It was a Friday and we knew estate agents didn’t usually work on Saturdays so we only had today. We weren’t expecting to find anything in such a short time but we could at the very least see what was on the market.
We frantically visited every estate agent we could find. As suspected it was mostly apartments in our price range. Any houses available were over our budget and in short supply or too modern. Another discussion over lunch and we decided the location was definitely right. We didn’t want to compromise our search criteria of an old house with character in need of renovation close to restaurants. There was only one thing to do and that was raise our budget by €50,000 to a total of €200,000 including renovation costs.
Some of the agents we met were extremely supportive and helpful. We had appointments to see properties on Friday evening and Saturday morning outside of their regular working hours.
And then we found a great property with great potential. Location, location, location. It was an inheritance sale so the owners were in Lisbon. It had been on the market since May 2015 with lots of viewings but nobody would touch it. It was damp and an ugly duckling but to us it could be a swan.
I started to plan a return trip in March…..
